STAR - Christian Ridey - May 2011
POTATO chips were used to lure Christian
Ridey to run when he was nine years old.
Today, the North Ryde 12-year-old has taken
to the track with such gusto that it puts “a
lump in everybody’s throat”, according to
Ryde Little Athletics president Ron Daniel.
Christian, who attends Karonga School in
Epping, was diagnosed with Down syndrome at
birth and autism aged nine. His mother,
Lisa, could not be more proud of her son,
nicknamed cheeky monkey, and paid special
mention of her 45-year-old husband, Marc,
who gives up his spare time to manage
Christian and other able-bodied boys his age
at Ryde Little Athletics, based at Dunbar
Park, Marsfield.
“At first, Christian wasn’t that keen on
athletics so my husband would have run in
front of him with a bag of chips to make him
run,” Mrs Ridey, 42, said.
“But now, during the September to March
athletic season, Christian becomes so
excited about what is coming he gets his
Little Athletics’ uniform out and lays it
neatly on the floor so he can get dressed
first thing Saturday morning. “He loves it.
“He is very happy to finish his races, even
though he comes last, and the other kids are
already finished and cheering him on.
“Sometimes, he stops and joins in the
applause.”
Christian’s efforts last season earned him
the Ryde Little Athletics’ Award for
Exceptional Effort.
Christian’s level of communication is the equivalent
of a one-year-old, Mrs Ridey said. “He can say a few
words, but not many people would understand what he
was saying,” she said. “Sport has been a great joy
in his life.”Christian also enjoys tenpin bowling,
tennis and swimming at Karonga School and at
Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club in West Ryde. “He has
been swimming since he was four and loves it,” Mrs
Ridey said. “He swims every Friday afternoon and
doesn’t want to get out. “If you mention swimming he
will get undressed and put his swimming costume on
and grab a boogie board. “He would be the first one
in and last one out. “That also applies for a bath,
too.” Mrs Ridey said Christian also liked eating,
especially chips or food left on his sister
Madeleine’s plate, playing in the bedroom of his
13-year-old brother, James, and watching movies, in
particular Toy Story 3 and Spiderman. He disliked
having the television turned off, having a hair cut
and a dinner plate “with no food left on it”.
Christian is this week’s Northern District Times
Junior Sports Star, sponsored by Rebel Sport and
Event Cinemas. Mrs Ridey also nominated her husband
for the Contribution to Sport Award. “Marc is not
very sporty, he’d rather be sleeping in, but he
makes a special effort to get up on Saturday
mornings to look after Christian and the other boys
his age and every year the club asks him back.

Ash Springett has just returned from the 2010
Special Olympics held in Adelaide with a bronze medal for
Tennis. He has been inspiring Ryde Tennis STARS to try their
hardest, play fair and have a go at tennis. Kids at school
and kids at home are having a great time developing
grassroots tennis and getting healthy, active and energised.
Ash says’ “try all sports and have fun because you never
know what opportunities are available.”
Ash is one of the coaches of the Sports STAR
Team visiting schools developing Tennis, Table Tennis and
Handball. Kids can learn multi skills at school and at home
on the FREE Sports Skill Cards on the website

STARS stands for School Talent Area Region
State. Sports STAR will be organising a schools sports
challenge to try all sports as a lead into the Granny Smith
Festival.
The big hit will be Handball to see who can
play at school and represent their school at the Ryde
Challenge.
The process starts in your child’s school and
proceeds to Sydney Olympic Park visiting Shopping Centres
and Festivals on the way.
There are some FREE tickets for the Holidays

Holidays Sports Camps - Week 1 - July 2009
COFFS Harbour children have been encouraged to
play sport and lead a healthy lifestyle with a
free Sports Star day held at the Coffs Harbour
Tennis Club.
Sports Star is multi sports
program that is available to all Coffs Harbour
kids both at schools as well as the Tennis Club
based at Brelsford Park.
Coffs Harbour City Council Mayor Keith
Rhoades generously donated his time last week
during the day to come down and hand out awards
and speak to children about the importance and
benefits of playing sport and leading a healthy
lifestyle.
The mayor also had an important message about
being sun smart as a few of the children were
not wearing hats, however it was ensured that
all children were wearing sunscreen.
Participants at last week's Sports Star Day
had a great time participating in games such as
hockey, AFL, tennis, basketball, netball,
football, floorball and more.
The tennis club also held a four-day tennis
clinic last week which was well supported. The
club will be holding another tennis clinic this
week for some school holiday fun and more Sports
Star days.
Any kids wishing to be part of either of
these events should get their parents to contact
the Coffs Harbour Tennis Club on 6651 1615.
